Chris Tomlin Announces New Christmas Picture Book
Chris Tomlin has helped a lot of families sing about Jesus. Now he’s giving them something they can read together, too.
He has a new Christmas picture book coming November 10 called Good News of Great Joy. It follows a young shepherd named Shep and his dog, Shadow. Shep is spending his very first night looking after the sheep on his own when an ordinary night turns into something he could never have imagined. Angels announce that Jesus has been born, and he and Shadow make their way to Bethlehem.
The book gives children a character to follow into that familiar Christmas story. They may already know about the baby in the manger. This lets them imagine the surprise of hearing that news for the very first time.
And there’s another musical connection here. The illustrations are by Scott Ligertwood, who’s married to Brooke Ligertwood. If that name sounds familiar, Brooke is one of the writers behind worship songs like “What a Beautiful Name” and “King of Kings.”
The book is aimed at children ages four to eight, so this could be something to read with your kids or grandkids as Christmas approaches. It also gives you an easy place to start a conversation: Why were the shepherds so excited? And why do we still celebrate the birth of Jesus all these years later?
